Joe Carter has a lengthy post regarding an important human rights abuse that many probably would rather ignore. In fact, many otherwise congenial people make jokes about it. Mr. Carter writes:

We are justifiably outraged by the human rights abuses occurring in foreign lands. So why aren’t we more outraged by the atrocities here in our own country? Our reactions to the problem tend to range from smirking indifference to embarrassed silence. Yet rape and other forms of sexual assault are becoming endemic to our prison system.

As a group, prison inmates do not tend to garner much sympathy from a public that frequently complains that they are overly coddled. Be that as it may, all people deserve basic humane protections. This is a problem that is not funny and that should be addressed.
