Don't Send Kids to Hamilton College

An alumnus of Hamilton College offered to donate $3.6 million to assist with the projected launch of the Alexander Hamilton Center, which was to give special attention to the study of western civilization. After much political wrangling, a coalition of faculty members were successful in killing the project.

Read about it here.

Actually, the center was not really for the study of "Western Civilization"--it was concerned mainly with a very limited slice of American history from a very limited point of view. Nor was it blown away by a coalition of faculty: it was the Board of Trustees (mainly lawyers, bankers, and other affluent and fairly conservative men) that scuttled the project.

Well, for a college named after Alexander Hamilton to give special consideration to aspects of that founding father's thought is hardly a radical concept. In addition, whatever the personal politics of the trustees (one's status as a lawyer, banker, or an affluent person doesn't make one conservative), the school has earned a reputation for pushing out toward the radical left fringe by means of its reaching out to extremists such as Ward Churchill.
