Former President Clinton Campaigning for Lieberman

Former President Bill Clinton will be campaigning for Senator Joe Lieberman in his tough primary battle for re-election, according to a campaign spokesman. Clinton has known Lieberman since they met while Clinton was a student at Yale. In addition to a longstanding friendship, Clinton, who knows self-preservation like few others, undoubtedly realizes that those opposing Lieberman, if successful, will run the Democratic Party over a cliff.

I think it is interesting that the Clinton/Lieberman friendship survived the caustic commentary (justified imo) that Lierberman made re Clinton and the Lewinsky affair.

I personally wished Clinton had resigned the presidency after that debacle, but I still think Clinton is interesting, thoughtful and loyal (moreso than his wife). To what end is Clinton self-preserving with his campaigning for Lieberman? I don't get that comment. I don't think he's running for anything anymore.

I do agree that Clinton's attempts to moderate the Democrat party are certainly being hurt by the attacks on Lieberman.

In addition to his attachment to Lieberman, which I assume to be a genuine factor, I think that Clinton must be aware that his own legacy will be affected if his party self-destructs less than a decade after he left office. Also, because Clinton came to the position partly under the auspices of the DLC's efforts to moderate the party, the leftward push is counter to his own commitments for the survival of the party.
